Vacation 2008: Emerald Isle, N.C.

Been quite awhile since I've gone anywhere, last time I flew out was to Orlando for a convention that was work related. This year we went to Emerald Isle, North Carolina. First off i'll say that N.C. is very beautiful and the roads around Raleigh/Durham are nice and smooth.. made me wish I had the STi out there. The trip from the airport to the beach house took us about 4 hrs due to some mishaps on directions, nonetheless we made it and it was totally worth it.

This vacation seemed like it would never come, but It finally did and boy was it a great one. We went to Emerald Isle, North Carolina. It happens to be a small island right off North Carolina's coast that's been riddled with numerous ship wrecks in past and serves as a great vacation spot to tourists.

Our beach house sat right on the beach, You open the window and there sits the ocean just gleeming at you. It was pretty dope. Great friends, great food, and a great view. Couldn't ask for anything else. It was so relaxing just doing nothing everyday. I tried to take up boogie boarding and failed half the time. Ended up cut up and bruised, but had a blast doing it lol.

One day we up to a town called Aurora which is a very old, small but interesting town. The town is known for its phosphate mine and what has been found out of it. Jerry, Amber's dad told us about it and how he laided railroad track there a few years ago and how he stopped to check out the fossil museum. So we went and checked it out and as soon as we parked I noticed huge mounds of this "dirt" which turned out to be the rejected rocks and whatever else that wasn't phosphate. The museum lets the public go through these mounds of stuff to search for fossils, mainly shark teeth and fossilized coral skeletons which interested me alot. I found a bunch of coral fossils which were littered all over the place. They looked like a form of porites or some form of acropora sp. We went inside to check out all of the other stuff they've found there over the years and also watched an informative video about the history of the place. The shark teeth they had recovered out of this place is crazy, the most important one to me is of course the biggest predatory shark to live on earth: Megalodon. I have always been interested about this shark and its history. I've never seen a Megalodon tooth in person before so it was cool to see them on display.

A few pics around the place..

The big bucket they use when excavating earth from the phosphate mine.

Guess someone didn't like the bucket..
